The Mandel Center in Jaffa, a longstanding cultural and community hub, required a comprehensive renewal to meet contemporary standards of accessibility, functionality, and user experience. While the original building had served the community for many years, its main public spaces had become outdated. Both the auditorium, with its aging seating and limited infrastructure, and the institutional library required significant renovation. The renewal process began in 2019 with the renovation of the auditorium and continued in 2021 with the redesign of the library, one of the center's central public spaces. The auditorium underwent a complete visual and acoustic transformation. Slatted wood panels were introduced across the walls and ceiling, creating a warm architectural character while also serving as an integrated acoustic treatment. The seating was replaced, and a new architectural lighting system contributes to a more intimate and professional performance environment. The library was redesigned as an open and accessible learning environment. Existing partitions were removed to improve circulation and visual continuity, while a new accessible shelving system created brighter and more flexible spaces with dedicated areas for study and activity. The entrance area was transformed into an informal community lounge, providing a welcoming space for meeting and gathering. The program was expanded to include a technology-enabled study room, workshop space, and a dedicated early childhood area. A small "nostalgia corner," incorporating preserved original furniture from the center, maintains a tangible connection to the building's history while allowing the renewed spaces to support contemporary community use.
