Preserving the Kibbutz Spirit in a Contemporary Space

The Members' Club at Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek is a building of both historical and communal significance, set within the kibbutz's green lawns and mature landscape. Defined by clean lines and modernist simplicity, the original structure served for decades as a central gathering place and an important focus of social life. The renovation sought to restore the building's role as an active community hub while adapting it to contemporary standards of comfort and hospitality. At the same time, the project preserves the building's original architectural character and strengthens its connection to the history and landscape of the kibbutz.

A Dialogue Between Interior and Exterior

The design process was guided by an approach of "preservation through renewal." The main architectural intervention involved opening the building's envelope and significantly enlarging the windows, bringing natural light deep into the interior and creating a direct visual connection to the tall cypress trees and surrounding lawns. The interior is defined by light wood carpentry and clean lines, introducing warmth while maintaining a strong relationship with the green landscape beyond. The central hall was redesigned as a flexible multipurpose space, accommodating a range of activities from intimate gatherings to larger community events. The result is an accessible, welcoming, and light-filled space that respects the building's architectural heritage while providing kibbutz members with a contemporary shared "living room" for everyday use, gatherings, and community life.
